October 17, 2007 – Another scientist rattles some teacups.

World renowned scientist, Dr. James Watson (not exactly as shown)

This time, it’s the brilliant James Watson, co-inventor of the “Watson and Crick” double-helix DNA model.  He’s suggesting that Africans are less intelligent than Westerners.  Why do I get the feeling that Watson really didn’t need to conduct any research to come to that conclusion.  Look at Africa.  Then compare it to Europe and North America.  Who’s, for the most part, sitting around with flies up their nose waiting for the next handout from Bono?  Not us.

I’m not saying we’re better or anything.  Um…actually…YEAH, I AM saying we’re better.  We’ve significantly modified and adapted our environment to meet our needs.  They haven’t.  The only folks who may not consider that a plus are the treehuggers among us who still eat dirt-covered homegrown organic carrots.

And why haven’t they?  You can’t argue that they don’t have the resources, or at the very least, that they couldn’t import them if they wanted to, like we did here, way back when.  At some point in history, there was nothing here, either.  And we decided to do something about it.

According to Watson:  “There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.”

There is a fascinating scientific phenomenon here (ie. do genetics play a role in the divergent evolutionary paths taken by various people?), but we’ll never have this debate.  Instead, this poor scientist is going to get hammered because some people don’t like the conclusion to which his evidence points.  And watch — none of his critics will be able to refute his assertion with any facts or logic, instead he’ll be branded a “racist”, “bigot” and other names people get called when others want to shut them up because they can’t mount a decent counter-argument.

And what are his critics trotting out now?  Hate laws.  They’re going to try to screw Watson with the long dick of the law, because heaven forbid people be permitted to hear this award-winning scientist’s arguments and be capable of deciding whether what he says makes sense, or if he’s just a loon.

If you think this sort of thing couldn’t ever happen in the USA, land of the free, check out what Ted Kennedy tacked on to the last war funding bill — some “hate laws”!  Because, yeah, that totally makes sense when you’re dealing with war.
